Interview with Crissy Calhoun - "Love You to Death: The Unofficial Companion to The Vampire Diaries"

What inspired You to write this books?

My love for the show! I wasn’t sure about the concept of it, before I’d seen the first episode, but The Vampire Diaries was a lot smarter and more interesting than I expected. I had written a book about Gossip Girl the year before, and I felt I could write about The Vampire Diaries since the show is so rich.
Did you expect so much interest in Your book?
Honestly, I didn’t really think about it. I hoped that the fans who loved the show as much as I do would find my book and enjoy reading it.
About “Vampire Diary” did You prefer a book or serial?
I watched the show before I read the books, and so for me the show always comes first. The books are very different and I really enjoyed reading them, but the Elena, Stefan, and Damon I picture are always the TV show versions.
Which of the heroes of the series is the closest You?
I would like to say Elena — she is very brave, a good friend and sister, and cares about the welfare of Mystic Falls and what’s right and wrong — but I am probably more like Aunt Jenna!
It was hard to get You an interview with the actors?
Not too hard. I contacted a number of the actors through their management and most were very enthusiastic to talk about working on the show.
Descriptions of episodes must require a lot of time. Did You do not get bored this work?
I don’t! If I didn’t like the show much, I don’t think I could write this book because it involves watching the episodes a number of times, thinking about them, doing research, writing, editing, and so on. But luckily, even after watching an episode of The Vampire Diaries 10 times, I still love it. Perhaps even more than on the first watch because I’ve analyzed it.
How was working with L. J. Smith?
I haven’t actually worked with L.J. Smith; I did a lot of research to write the chapter on her. She was kind enough to accept my friend request on Facebook and send me a message, but other than that I only know her through her novels.
Are You interested in the paranormal?
I read a lot of fiction that involves paranormal elements, but in real life I am not that into it.
Did You believe in vampires?
The idea of there being a real-life Stefan Salvatore out there is appealing, but I don’t believe in immortal blood-sucking creatures. Sadly.
What image of the vampire is the closest to You?
If I were a vampire, I would probably be a little like Stefan’s best friend Lexi.
What decided when selecting photographs for the book?
Choosing photos is a lot of work, but a lot of fun. As you can imagine, there are tons of photos of the cast to select and I wanted to make sure I represented all of the characters and key moments from the show. Certainly spending hours looking at pictures of Ian Somerhalder is a nice thing to call “work.”
What do you think about the work of Kevin Williamson?
I was a teenager when Dawson’s Creek and the Scream movies came out, and I really loved what he created in those series. He’s the reason I tuned into The Vampire Diaries in the first place. In his storytelling, he has a great way of combining heart and wit and terror.
I've heard that Your grandfather come from Poland.  Did You were in Poland?
My Grandfather Kolodziej lived in Katowice, and I still have family in Warsaw. I have never been to Poland myself but I grew up in the Polish area of Toronto, so Polish culture was a part of my upbringing. I would love to visit one day.
Why did you decide to Amber Publishing? Do you know this Polish Publisher?
Because I don’t speak Polish myself, the arrangement between Amber Publishing and my Canadian publisher, ECW Press, was done through an agent who does. I was very happy and honored to hear that they wanted to publish my book, and my mother was excited that it would be translated into Polish.
What are Your future plans Publishing?
I am currently writing a book about the second season of The Vampire Diaries, which will be published in English in September.
Did You think about your own story with vampires?
I’ve never written fiction before, so I probably won’t. But vampire stories certainly are popular right now!
If you would author Vampire’s Diary, what you change in this story?
I would introduce a character named Crissy who would go to Mystic Falls and date Damon Salvatore . . . Just kidding! I love what the writers on The Vampire Diaries do with the storylines and characters, so I’m happy to sit back and enjoy the show. And then write about it!
